5 out of the 8 cars my family owns are currently at the house so I decided to take a picture of all of them.

First off we have the 1999 BMW 318ti:

Kinja'd!!!

The lovable, funky, yet frequently unloved trunk impaired 318. Our track/autocross car.

Next we have the 2005 MINI Cooper S:

Kinja'd!!!

The extremely fun yet respectful runaround. A Golf GTI for people who like to party. My DD.

Next we have the 2000 BMW 528i:

Kinja'd!!!

The autobahn stormer. The road trip machine/my dad’s DD

Next is the 1968 Mustang:

Kinja'd!!!

Locked inside. No crowd hunting for this pony. The “investment”

Finally we have the 1982 BMW 633 CSi:

Kinja'd!!!

New kid on the block, not currently running. The project car.

Not pictured are the 2003 X5 and 2005 X3 on DD duty for my mom and sister, and the 1970 BMW 1600-2 which was the first car my dad ever bought, way back in 1985.

How did the vinyl application go?

Not too bad, I’ll put another post up tonight about it. The stripes are a bit fucked up but they were only $12 total and Im not sure if I like them or not. The black jack went on pretty easy with an extra pair of hands and looks good to me.

I wouldn’t be doing stripes as I don’t see the point in putting them on a standard Cooper. And my hood needs to be repainted anyway to fix the rock chips.

I just don’t think they work on dark silver, I tend to prefer stripes on my Coopers but something just seems off.

I think it has to do with how the factory black stripes have white edges to them while yours appear to be just black.

Kinja'd!!!

Also I am jealous of your black trim. Mines all ugly.

I’ve got a strip of white edging that I can put on but I dont particularly like the white edge either. Also, I just plastidipped the trim and honestly it looks pretty bad within 1o feet but the chrome is worse, haha.

Beautiful, wonderful collection.

Not crazy about the rims on the 528, though, JMHO.

I need to do something to tone down the chrome on mine as well. My big thing is the condition of all the black plastic. It looks horrible after 12 years of sun. I would take it off an properly paint it but I am worried that if I take it off I would never be able to get it back on. I would love to be able to get it black enough that I could pull off a set of black OZ Superturismo GTs.

Thanks!

My dad and I like the rims well enough, not perfect for the car but they work.

Every time I wash it I use some Mothers Back to Black trim restorer for the plastic trim and it stays black for a week or two. Rather than re-painting them a better solution is to get a heat gun and basically melt the plastic.

I know Desu-san-desu does back to black on his R53 once a month and his trim looks pretty good. My issue is I am of to school this weekend at which point my car won’t be washed until I come home to visit in
October.

Yea, the back to black is okay, its just that its not really permanent and takes a good amount of time to apply properly. I might actually go to Walmart and pick up a heat gun for $20 and do the actual restoration.

As do I, I could do without the X series’ problems but my mom and sister love them. Otherwise they’re all great cars in some form.

On the 318ti? Its actually fern green metallic which I believe is a fairly rare option but dark green is a fantastic color nonetheless.

My thing about doing the heat gun process is that it is not a permanent solution. It is still going to fade. Hence why I am considering painting it as hopefully the paint wont fade like the raw plastic would.

Its not permanent but it lasts for months at a time if not years. There’s pros and cons to all of the methods.

There are. In any case I am not going to be doing anything to my car until next summer when I get back from school.

1970 BMW 1600-2

We NEED pics, Also, does the ‘Stang at least get driven on weekends?

Kinja'd!!! Trunk Impaired 318 > Spridget

Kinja'd!!!0

I’ll see if I can find any. As for the ‘Stang we usually only get around 200-400 miles on it per year, its just not an enjoyable drive. Too much power, no brakes, no steering feel and it hates driving in a straight line.

Pardon the wheels, we’re saving up for some nice Alpina Borrani steelies and the stock steelies were on their last legs.

I . . .. actually like those wheels. Are you keeping it stock or modding it?

If it’s an investment, you might as well sell it know. Muscle car values have been bottoming out lately, albeit slowly. IMO, the 6 Series and 1600-2 will have a greater increase in value in five years than the ‘Stang.

Its my dad’s car until he dies (he bought it when he was 18 for his first car back in 85) I know he wants to do another full restoration but other than that I think he just wants to do some form of dual carbs.

The 1600-2 will never get sold but I did convince my dad on getting the 6 because literally every old manual BMW is skyrocketing in value. We might look to sell the ‘Stang but we’ve had it for a while now and did restore it so theres some sentimental value in it that Im sure we’ll miss when its gone.

Do you mean they have reliability problems?

Kinja'd!!! Trunk Impaired 318 > RT

Something is usually wrong with them but no more than our other BMWs they’re just a lot harder and expensive to work on.

Ah, I understand. I’ve heard later models are much more reliable (though they would probably be even harder to work on).

We’ve put over 100,000 miles on the X5 so I really shouldnt be complaining but I just much prefer the E39. They carry the same amount of people and things but the E39 does is much much more comfortably and does at least 50% better MPG. The only thing the X5 can do that the E39 cant is carry 5 people and 2 dogs.
